FAMED CANTER’S DELI OPENS OUTLET IN LAS VEGAS

LAS VEGAS – Canter’s Deli is a place where a martini-crowd meets matzoh ball soup and the who’s who gather. In April 2004, the legendary Los Angeles landmark expanded across state lines into Las Vegas and opened one of Hollywood’s hippest hangouts at Treasure Island (TI). Canter’s at TI features genuine deli fare amid the renowned design of Jordan Mozer.

As the “in” place to see and be seen in Hollywood when it opened in 1931, Canter’s quickly became a spot where high-profile deals were made between producers, directors and agents. It’s a mid-century, modern hangout for rock stars, actors, producers, bohemians and a colorful cross-section of Los Angelinos.

“The new TI is the perfect fit for this famous, hip hangout,” said Tom Mikulich, president of TI. “TI continues to evolve by creating new experiences for our visitors. Canter’s adds a special vibe and a new dimension to our dynamic restaurant choices.”

Canter’s at TI features the famed corned beef and pastrami sandwiches, made-on-the-premises, slightly hot pickles, rich cheese blintzes, bean-and-barley and matzo ball soups and ruggelah from their European bakery.

The Chicago design team Jordan Mozer and Associates reinvented the Las Vegas Canter’s in the spirit of the original ultra-modern Canter’s of 1953. Canter’s at TI shares many of the original’s features, but with updated designs. Dozens of sculptors, artists and artisans created special one-of-a-kind seating, lighting and sculptures.

Seamless terrazzo floors and curvy stainless steel kitchen counters are found throughout the new restaurant. The walls are covered in bright glass tiles and colorful sculptures inspired by the glass wall hangings at the original delicatessen. The result is a modern Canter’s restaurant and hangout for the new TI.

The Canter’s story began in the early 1900s.

  • 1924 - In Jersey City, New Jersey, Ben Canter and his brothers opened Canter Brothers Delicatessen
  • 1931 - The brothers moved the restaurant to Brooklyn Avenue in Los Angeles where they introduced 10 cent corned beef and pastrami sandwiches to very receptive Californians
  • 1948 - Ben Canter and his wife Jennie and their niece Selma moved the restaurant to Fairfax Avenue in Los Angeles and renamed it Canter’s
  • 1953 - Canter’s moved down the street into a new, super-modern restaurant in the old Esquire Theater. Open 24 hours a day, the restaurant became a landmark and a symbol of Hollywood

Today, Canter’s Deli continues to be a family-run business. Ben and Jeannie’s son, Alan Canter, and his three children Marc, Gary and Jacqueline, and Selma’s daughter Terri, ensure the Canter’s name and success remain strong.
